Joe's Rants and Raves

  • Feb 09 - 12:35 PM: Local Brewer to be Sold? : Joe McBane

The rumor central tells me that private equity firm KPS Capital Partners is considering purchasing Highfalls brewery. They are also said to be considering Labatt that is due to be sold as part of the Inbev A-B merger.

From my experience regional breweries in these types of deals tend to disapear. We could well see Highfalls become a Labatt production facility for this part of the world as freight costs would signifcantly decline in what is a strong market. I fear this could be final chapter for one of our local beer brands.

  • Feb 08 - 09:20 AM: The Return of McBanes : Joe McBane

Some of you may have noticed the absence of McBanes Best Bitter for a couple of weeks recently. The reason for the disapearance were some quality control issues. We noticed that it had taken on an excessive amount of haze. While a touch of haze is ok it should certainly not look like a dunkel weisse. It is worth pointing out that the flavor is not effected by an issue such as this but just like food, beer should look appealing. We made the decision to get rid of the rest of the batch and start fresh.

The new batch was put on tap on Friday. It has a touch of haze and continues to be a work in progress but is definitely a product that we are proud to serve.

Good job to Bruce Lish, brewer at Rohrbachs.

  • Feb 08 - 08:46 AM: Polar Plunge : Joe McBane

Some of our staff will be participating in a Polar Plunge at Lake Ontario today at noon. Why would they subject themselves to such shrinkage, extreme uncomfort and possible instant death through cold water shock reaction? The reason is to raise money for Special Olympics.

Support them if you can. Donations can be made at the bar. I think they are crazed but courageous. Good luck.
